ADVANCED SEMINAR FOR VIOLIN OR PIANO

July 29-August 12

This program is designed for advanced violinists and pianists with considerable experience and command of the vast repertoire, who are preparing for a professional career through orchestral auditions, competitions, etc. The goal is to help students/participants expand their experience; enhance their performances; and test and toughen their readiness and competitiveness in the field.

The program consists of a series of classes given by world renowned artists and teachers on various topics (*see below*) which present the main categories of their solo field.

All classes are two hours long and include four active student-performers. All participants of the program are required to attend all classes. Each student/participant is expected to perform (actively participate) in four (4) classes during the two-week program.

Applicants who are accepted into the program may indicate their class preferences. The Festival will do its best to accommodate, but cannot guarantee these preferences.

The number of participants in the program is limited. In order to be considered for a spot in the program, interested students are advised to apply early and present a strong audition tape that best represents his or her level, experience, and command of the repertoire.

Violin:

Victor Danchenko – Concerti of the Romantic Period.
This part of the seminar will develop and demonstrate the unique and purposeful approach to Romantic concertos. Understanding the epic element of the music; and how to communicate it effectively utilizing freedom and discipline, intensity and flair. Among the studied works will be concertos by Brahms, Mendelssohn, Bruch (Sibelius, Wieniawski).
Mikhail Kopelman

Mikhail Kopelman – Concerti and Other Pieces of the Classical Period.
Topic: Refining and defining the Classical Style. How to practically express and define the universal concept of classical idealism: celestial order and harmony, symmetry, elegance, purity, and nobility. Utilizing technical elements; intonation, vibrato, rhythm, and dynamics to create the clarity and form appropriate and necessary to the style.

Suggested pieces:
Mozart – Sonatas, Concertos
Beethoven – Sonatas, Romances, Concerto
Schubert – Sonatinas, Rondo, Dou, Phantasy

Dmitri Berlinsky

Dmitri Berlinsky – Concert Pieces and Virtuoso Music.
VIRTUOSITY, beyond the technical challenge: Background and influence on the development of violin playing and tradition. Learn to recognize and develop the bravura and flair necessary and integral to the style; and not merely practice to overcome technical difficulties.

Eduard Schmieder Eduard Schmieder – Tchaikovsky Concerto.
At the time of certain attention to so called "informed" performances of baroque music, it is also important to recall the romantic traditions. The master class on Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto is designed to inform listeners of an original Saint Petersburg’s tradition of interpretation. Mistakes and misconceptions of the printed text will be revealed. Suggestions of bowings and fingerings enhancing proper articulation will be given. For the clarity, all three movements of the concerto must be performed, possibly by a different participant for each movement.
Emanuel Borok

Emanuel Borok – Orchestral Literature in Preparation for Auditions.

This class will focus on the vocal and instrumental inspirations behind the keyboard music of this period, as well as the interconnectedness of structure and character culminating in Beethoven's towering piano sonatas.
Philip Kawin Phillip Kawin – Sound Production and Voicing in Music by Schumann
